Even more geocaching

Headed off today to find the other two close geocaches. Score for the day was two for two, so things went well!

First one was at the old ruined kirk near my home.

This geocache included a series of puzzles - answered by wandering around the kirk and graveyard looking for certain things. After the answers were found, they were used to work out the next set of co-ordinates. Just as we were working out the numbers - we had to hide from a short but heavy deluge of hailstones.

It turns out that the co-ordinates were 5 minutes walk BACK the way we had come. So we decided to put it off till we headed back home.

Our next stop was the Braefoot battery, which i’ve visited a number of times over the years. I used to play there as a child, and i’ve visited recently to take photographs.

After a short search i spotted this:
braecache0

A fairly large cache, which had obviously been visited by some kids in the past, made evident by the giraffe among other things.

I took some kind of Russian fabric patch, and left a little smiley badge - as well as my first travel bug!

On the way back we checked out the co-ordinates from the first cache, and ended up finding a small cache:

Which, as is apparently “usual”, included a golf ball!

I took a small yellow bouncy ball which had an amusing face drawn on it, and left an LED keychain torch.

All in all a constructive day.

Geocaching

Went on my first intentional geocaching trip today. I say intentional because i found one quite by accident recently.

I’ve been interested in Geocaching for 5 or 6 years now, but i’ve never had a chance to do it because i didn’t want to commit to an expensive GPS receiver which didn’t have the features i wanted. But after finding one while out on a walk i couldn’t resist, and purchased a brand new Garmin Etrex H.

A few days ago i went out hunting a nearby geocache, but after quite a while scrambling up and down rocks i gave up, wondering if i had inputted the co-ordinates wrong. Today we went back to the spot, and after a long while searching, and climbing.. We found it!

dinocache1

Yup, we couldn’t spot it either.. But here it is:
dinocache2

Very well hidden. The box itself had some kind of camouflage coating which made it very hard to spot. Not to mention the fact that it was in a cleft between some rocks, which you had to climb down to reach!

dinocache3

You can see the camo coating here. The cameraphone picture doesn’t do it justice, but trust me that the colour and texture were spot on. The only thing that gave it away was the corners!

dinocache4

The contents. It’s a dinosaur themed cache, and the guy who left it instructed all other geocachers to leave a drawing of a dinosaur in the log book. I didn’t take a photograph of my drawing simply because art is hardly my strong point. You can also see some plastic dinosaurs that had been left as geoswag, some coloured pens for the dino drawings, and …a golf ball.

I took something and left something, as is the spirit of geocaching. I took the rubber lizard and left an LED keychain light.

All in all, success!

This could be the start..

.. of something beautiful

pyramid

It’s a pyramid made out of blu-tac. Maybe one day it’ll be huge.
new desk

Here’s my new desk too. Looks a bit to the way it looked a few days ago. New desk which is finally suitable for my height (6′4), new monitor (24″ Dell), new laptop stand (griffin elevator), new speakers (cheap logitech 2.1 set), new mouse (logitech laser), new server (HP Proliant) and the corner of a new motherboard which i have to send back!

Note the 500gig western digital external drive fits perfectly under the griffin elevator. Weee.

Shaun: :D
aaron: “sorry, i was a bit busy and didn’t see that you were killing me”
Shaun: “I always ignore people killing me”
Shaun: “I hate accepting kills”
aaron: “when people are killing me i just ignore it, then kill them back after”
Shaun: “There’s nothing more annoying when a co-worker gets a kill whilst in the office”
aaron: “kill screening”
Shaun: :D
Shaun: “killback service”
aaron: “GOD i’ve been getting these anonymous kills ALL day”
Shaun: “The worst thing is when a big kill center gets hold of your number”
aaron: “some foreign guy has been killing me randomly all week”
Shaun: “they kill you constantly, all day long”
Shaun: “until you give in to them”
Shaun: “The BT Killcenter worker of the week is David, with an amazing 1720 kills!”
aaron: “i might get a machine to take my kills for me while i’m out”
Shaun: killer ID
Shaun: “The person who killed you was…”
Shaun: there’s nothing worse than when people withhold their kill
Shaun: conferencing is great
Shaun: you can get like 8 people in on one kill
Shaun: “Did I get any kills while I was out?”
Shaun: “Yeah, a few”

late 90’s geekery

I figured i’d look for a decent screensaver to run on the new HP Proliant ML110 that’s sitting under my desk, and ended up doing this.
matrix screensaver

I know i know, but i couldn’t resist! Who doesn’t love The Matrix screensavers?
I’ve stuck on this meagre little desk till i can find a better replacement, so i may as well have some fun!
Also on the desk:
a 16GB ipod touch, a sony ericsson k850i, a nintendo ds lite, painkillers, vitamins, juggling bags, a WD 500GB external drive, an 8GB flash drive, an ipod dock, my wallet, and the macbook pro is sitting on this book.

Mockup

btb mockup

Just got finished this mockup. I’m worried that it’s too dark and foreboding to be genre independent. But i need to get up and away from the computer for a while before my opinion actually means anything. Too tiiiiired.

Test post

posting this from my new iPod touch. I’m way more comfortable with the text entry now. Maybe I shouldnt have been so hasty to decide against the iPhone.

Tuesdays: A Case Study

My life is, for want of a less cliché word in the world of IT, dynamic.

A couple of Tuesdays ago i had to go to hospital in the morning for a seminar on “Pain Management”. I say “seminar”… only two people turned up for it. A few junior physiotherapists sat in just to make up the numbers - depressing. It was reasonable, mostly stuff i knew but a couple of interesting concepts.

After the seminar i jumped on a couple of trains, carried some bags for an English girl on her way back to university, and made it to work by lunch time.

After work i jumped on another train destined for Edinburgh, for my evening at Dorkbot.

Slumberland was calling through the dymanic stylings of drum and bass as we approached Haymarket station. As usual i considered the local sushi restaurant, and how infrequently i can sample it’s culinary delights.

“One of these days i need to go to Sushiya before i go to Dorkbot… But i’ll never have enough time… Actually i’ve got an hour… Ah, screw it!”

So yeah, i jumped off the train and headed up to Sushiya.

Inside i found just one person. Another English girl. Sushiya is about the same size as a Kinder Surprise so we ended up sitting at tables next to each other. Her American boyfriend turned up and we ended up talking about Coen brothers movies and I Am Legend after he accidentally fired an edamame bean at my chest. Yes, odd i know.

After Sushiya i ventured off into Edinburgh to discover the hardest rain i’ve experienced there in a long time. But, being the utter imbecile that i am, i decided to put my hood up and walk rather than jumping in a taxi. About half way to Dorkbot i stood on a lose paving slab and splashed about 15 litres of rain water all over my light denim jeans - that was awesome..

As usual i was the first person to turn up for dorkbot, and after about five minutes sitting quietly i found myself in the middle of a staff meeting for the cafe / community centre / hippy den we meet up in. After a while spent listening to people debate the prices of falafel and nachos my fellow geeks turned up and we got on with some projects. The most exciting being awakening a RROD’d xbox 360.
xbox360revived

To test the 360 i went searching for a television. The search was led by a most excellent fellow called Gandalf. It was a perilous journey. It actually happened.

We could not believe it when the xbox actually booted. It had been stripped down with an ill fitting screwdriver and brute force, some of the parts had been mislaid, and was repaired using some old thermal paste and some internet-sourced bolts. But it yielded to our geekery and booted fully. Woo.

After a while discussing sterling engines and rack mounted synthesisers in the pub i caught the train home. An exciting evening completed.

Lets contrast this whole day again last tuesday.

Our server at work completely exploded.
Our backups completely exploded.
Half of the staff completely exploded. Well.. Maybe it was just my brain exploding.
I spent most of the day screaming on the phone to clueless tech support, or crying in the corner because my worst nightmare had just occurred.
It was pretty much the worst day at work i have ever experienced.. And to make things worse, i got home without the energy to play with these:
Legoarrivals

So, yeah. Tuesdays are strange.
