Bootcamp and partition errors

So you’ve probably heard of the game Bioshock. If you know me in person you probably also know that i’m incredibly excited about it. I’m not going to blog about the game right now, i’ll save that for later. But i will tell you a bit about the last couple of hours.

Today the Bioshock pc demo was released, and i urged a colleague of mine here to download and play it. Sadly the PC’s here are your typical dell business machines, nothing fantastic. The end result being that the Bioshock demo ran like hell. You could see that it was supposed to be pretty, you could appreciate the shiny water and the crackling flames. But you couldn’t really move, and that’s kind of important.

If only i had bothered to install bootcamp on my macbook pro..

Yeah, you’ve already guessed what happened next. I backed up my macbook pro, cleared out some space, and started installing bootcamp. Just to install a demo that i’ve completed 4 or 5 times on the xbox360. Not to mention the fact that the game is due out here on Friday, and i’ve preordered the collectors edition!

I started up the bootcamp installer, opted to make a 10GB partition for XP (i was using 6 or 7 gig for my parallels XP install, and that was going fine) and clicked continue.

Bootcamp Partition Error: “Files cannot be moved”

Bugger, wasn’t expecting that.

The installer explained that i needed to “repair” my drive. I’m in the habit of repairing my permissions almost every day, so i instinctively did that… only to get a new error message telling me that there were files bootcamp couldn’t move. The installers suggestion was to back up my entire drive, format, and then pull my backups back over before trying to install bootcamp. No chance!

I thought for a while, what kind of file would cause the problem… My first thought was parallels, perhaps it’s having difficulty with the protected files it uses. So i deleted parallels – to no avail. I got rid of incomplete Bittorrent downloads, and large video files. I got rid of temporary Final Cut files. Nothing.

Then it clicked.

I wasn’t repairing my disc, i was repairing the permissions. So i tried to verify the disk.

hfs broken

Of course, luckily for me you can’t repair the disc you’re currently booted from.. and i didn’t have my OS discs with me to boot from. Woo.

Just as i was about to give up i remembered that booting into safe mode runs fsck.. or something like it anyway. So i did just that (if you ended up here looking for a solution to the problem, you can enter safe mode by pressing shift as soon as you hear the boot chime, and holding it till the rotating “wheel” appears under the apple icon.. it’ll take a while to book into OSX, but one it does you can just restart to get back into OSX normally.). After i was back in the OS i ran Disk Utility again.

hfs fixed

Woo!

installing bootcamp

Woo!

Apparently there are 31 minutes remaining on my XP install.. hopefully things will remain this smooth.

Edit: It went fine. XP is installed.. though i can’t seem to connect to our wireless access point here..

Content Management Systems

So i’m working on a Content Management System for a small business startup. I’m not really going to go into any detail about who and what because it’s none of your business. I am however going to tell you about some of my thoughts on the subject.

I love administration systems, always have. For some reason i’m wired to really appreciate running systems and services. Providing resources from a technical perspective has always appealed to me. I’ve run servers, worked on games, developed websites and set up infrastructures.

To me it’s all about providing technical solutions to real-world problems. Digital solving analogue, cyberspace providing for meatspace. I enjoy a lot of things for similar reasons. I like firearms because they’re a technical solution to a very valid real world problem (people may want to kill me, i need to kill them first, you may not agree with the rationale, but it’s still a valid problem). I like engines because, again, they’re an example of humans using technological advances to conquer a pressing problem (this horse is nowhere near fast enough!). I read a very appropriate quote somewhere about flamethrowers being awesome because someone once sat and thought:

I want to set someone on fire, but without being close to them.

Awesome.

Anyway. I think i got a bit distracted there, you’ll notice i do that a lot.

Technology, ooh, Content Management Systems, that’s it. Yeah. So i’m working on this new CMS, and because the company it’s for work in an area that’s very close to my heart i’ve decided to do a good job on it. Not to say i don’t always do a good job.. Just that this time i’m doing a good job. I’ve changed my methodology a bit, and deployed some techniques that i’ve been meaning to get going for a long time.

I’ve been working on a form to add team members. It would’ve been very simple to make one big ugly plain HTML form with a load of fields and next to no descriptions.. But i didn’t do that. I spent considerable time and effort turning it into a multi-page form with validation. Good validation too, with appropriate notification and everything.

progress buttonsI even devoted a bunch of time to getting the simple progress indicator buttons the way i wanted them. It’s not often i’m inspired enough to let the user know how much more they have to do ;).

I’m happy with the way it’s been going. Really happy.

Which is kind of good considering i have like two days to finish it.

Hello world!

So i finally got round to installing WordPress again.

I’ve been putting it off because this domain was originally hosted in an environment which did not meet the minimum specs to run WordPress. A situation which would have been entirely resolvable save for my laziness.

Anyway, here we are in a crisp new WordPress environment, on a lovely new server. Take a deep breath, the air is fresh here.

I’m still tinkering with themes, widgets and plug-ins. This software has come on a long way since i last used it. Integrating Twitter as a widget was a snap thanks to Alex King’s plugin. I also found Ardamis’ Xbox gamercard plugin, which is a much nicer solution than the static images that i’ve seen some people using.

Anyway, i’m going to tinker further with this.
